Pastel Painting Materials List

A selection of at least a dozen soft pastels.
* If you buy a set, expand it so you have a dark, middle, and light value of each color in the set. In this class, we will be using only soft pastels, not oil pastels.
* Good brands include Rembrandt (most economical), Sennelier, Unison, and Schmincke. (Yarka, Alpha, and Nupastel are hard to work with and should be avoided.)

Drawing board (or piece of 1/8 inch masonite), 18”x24”

Masking tape

Pastel paper, or Canson Mi-Tientes (light gray, brown, pink - not white), any paper with tooth (not smooth)

Bristle brush (to brush away pastel), 1/4”

Kneaded eraser

Hand cleaners (wipes) are handy

Paper towels

Notebook

*If you are new to pastels, don’t worry about getting exactly the right sticks for the first class. There will be time to expand your colors when you understand more about pastels and what you need.
